why do you only use natural wax for your candles?

why do coconut & rapeseed wax candles burn longer than paraffin candles?

natural coconut & rapeseed wax burns longer because it has a lower melting point, causing it to burn cooler and slower. this cooler melt rate limits the amount of liquid wax feeding the flame at any given time, slowing down the overall consumption of the candle ​coconut & rapeseed wax possesses a denser, softer molecular structure which means the wax pool doesn't heat up or vaporise as aggressively as it does in paraffin candles, and the burn is measured and controlled coconut & rapeseed wax also has sustained heat distribution, which  creates an even melt pool. this ensures the candle burns evenly, eliminating wasted wax and maximising the total burn timeburn performance depends on the whole candle system working together, which is why we tested different wax, wick, fragrance and vessel combinations before settling on ours. our finished 30cl candles have a tested burn time of 45+ hours.

what is tunnelling?

tunnelling in a candle is when a hole forms down the centre of the candle, leaving unused wax on the sides. this is due to only the wax around the wick melting into a liquid pool, while the surrounding area stays hard. tunnelling can dramatically shorten the burn time of a candle, so should be avoided at all costs!  ​the biggest cause of tunnelling is not burning the candle for long enough on the first burn. for our 30cl candles, the first burn should always be 3-4 hours, allowing the melt pool to develop as evenly as possible ​many people don't realise the wax has a 'memory', therefore the first burn is the most important to get right as wax that has already melted is softer than wax that has not melted. on the second (and subsequent) burns, the softer wax will burn quicker than the harder wax so the melt area will shrink until eventually the wick becomes smothered and the candle is unusable  ​biggest tip to avoid tunnelling - always burn the candle for long enough on the first burn!!

how do I use wooden wicks?

wooden wicks require a little bit more care to ensure the best burn for your candlewhen lighting, carefully tilt the candle to around 45° and use a match or extended lighter so the flame reaches across the full width of the wooden wick. once the wick is fully lit, return the candle upright on a stable, heat-resistant surface before allowing it to burnwooden wicks need the flame for longer than cotton wicks, we recommend holding the flame to the base of the wooden wick for around 10-15 seconds to make sure it's fully litkeep wooden wicks short; if the wick is too long it will struggle to draw wax and may extinguishbefore every burn, trim the wick; either with a wick trimmer or use a tissue and gently snap off the burnt black tip once the candle is completely coolit's important to avoid drafts as they can cause the flame to flicker excessively, causing smoke or uneven melting if your wooden wick won't stay lit, it's usually because the wick is too long or the charred tip has not been removed, or it's due to debris in the wax pool (e.g. debris from matches or charred wick)debris can interfere with the wick and cause an uneven or poor burn

why has my candle wax changed colour after being lit?

at honey & me, we only use natural coconut & rapeseed wax and we do not add any artificial colourants; due to the nature of natural ingredients, this can impact the colour of the wax once the candle has created a wax pool and then cooled down some fragrance oils (such as vanilla) can oxidise and darken when exposed to light or air, which may cause discolouration over timewooden wicks may also cause some discolouration in the wax as they burn, this is normal and part of the natural process  natural wax may re-crystallise due to temperature fluctuations and cause a 'marbling' or 'frost' effect; this is typical for natural wax a degree of colour change can be perfectly normal in natural-wax candles with wooden wicks and is usually nothing to worry about
